Bariatric Surgery Methods
Tube Gastrectomy (Gastric Reduction Surgery)
With gastric reduction surgery, approximately 80% of the stomach is removed and the stomach is shaped like a thin tube. This method greatly reduces the stomach's capacity to absorb food, while directly affecting the hormones that create feelings of hunger and fullness. Its other name in the literature is “Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy”.
Advantages:
- The time to leave the hospital is shorter compared to other methods.
- The risk of complications is low and it is a comfortable method.
- It is possible for other serious diseases to decrease in proportion to the serious weight loss that will be experienced.
Who Can Have Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery?
- Patients between the ages of 18-65, with a body mass index of 35 and above, and no health condition that prevents surgery.
- In rare cases, it can be applied to patients under the age of 18 with parental approval.
- In patients with psychological problems or alcohol addiction, approval from the relevant branch physician is required.
Is Sleeve Gastrectomy Risky?
As with every intra-abdominal surgery, there are certain risks in this operation. There may be small leaks from the stomach suture area into the abdominal cavity, but this is a very low possibility. Choosing the right doctor before and after the surgery is very important.
Gastric Bypass Surgery
With this surgery, the stomach is reduced and the small intestine is connected to the reduced stomach. In this way, the patient eats less and the absorption of nutrients is reduced. This method also contributes to the improvement of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea due to weight loss.

Gastric Balloon
In this method, a silicone balloon is placed into the stomach endoscopically. Thanks to the balloon, the stomach's capacity to absorb nutrients decreases and the patient begins to lose weight over time.
Who Can Have a Gastric Balloon?
- It can be applied to patients who have weight problems, cannot lose weight, or are morbidly obese, in order to facilitate weight loss before surgery.
- Gastric balloon application is not performed on pregnant women and patients who use cortisol.
- This method is not recommended for patients with a wound in the stomach.
Gastric Balloon Risks:
- The balloon may rarely burst. However, since the liquid inside the balloon is colored, this condition is immediately noticed by the change in urine color and the balloon is removed.
- After the balloon is removed, the risk of weight regain is higher compared to surgical treatments.
Note: After the balloon application, patients should stay away from high-calorie and unhealthy foods.
